PC parts have been exorbitantly expensive for the past few years, with no clear sign of going back down. The most feasible way to build a powerful PC on a low budget these days is to buy high-end used, old parts. While they are more affordable, there are things you may not expect when owning one.
I have a Ryzen 9 3900x and an EVGA GTX 1080 Ti FTW3, both of which cost me a total of $800 back in the tail end of 2020. Both of those are still my daily drivers, making them 7 and 9 years old, respectively. Teenage me would’ve only dreamed of owning such a build, and while they weren’t the latest and greatest when I bought them, they were way more than powerful enough to satisfy that dream.
The Ryzen 9 3900x is still a beast in multi-threaded workloads in 2026; newer CPUs with lower core counts can beat it in single-threaded tasks, but it still hasn’t let me down in any situation I’ve put it in, especially rendering videos and 3D models. Even in non-multithreaded tasks, I haven’t felt like needing to upgrade my CPU.
The GTX 1080 Ti is a similar story; it still holds up very well in 2026 for my use cases. I rarely play the latest and heaviest games. I mostly play competitive online shooters and casual roguelike single-player games. It has no problem pushing 120+ FPS in games like Apex Legends, Counter-Strike, and Valorant. GTA V runs at 100+ FPS as well at medium-high settings.
Motherboards for old CPUs are also incredibly affordable, often being bundled with the CPU for practically free. You can often get top-tier X- or Z-series motherboards for AMD and Intel CPUs, respectively, for not much higher than the cost of the CPU alone, allowing for overclocking potential. And the great thing about overclocking old CPUs is that there is plenty of documentation, requiring less tinkering of your own.
Power consumption wasn’t something I considered when I built this. Back when I just built it, I lived somewhere with quite expensive power, and I was shocked. My bill was usually around $100 per month before the upgrade, and it jumped to about $180 after.
My old i5-6400 and GTX 960 consumed about 50-60 W on idle and less than 300 W while gaming. After the upgrade, the PC idles at 100 W and goes up to 400 W under constant gaming load. Through the pandemic, when my PC was basically on for 16 hours a day of mixed usage, this easily racked up to 100kW of electricity per month on the PC alone.
In comparison, a Ryzen 5 9600x and RTX 5060 Ti perform similarly but have a lower TDP of only 65 W and 150 W, respectively. Assuming 4 hours of heavy load per day, the old high-end parts would consume roughly 400 W, while the newer low-tier parts would consume about 270 W. You would be saving 15 kWh per month or 180 kWh per year. At $0.18/kWh, that’s $2.8/month or $34/year of savings.
Of course, you’d still have to consider the prices of DDR5 and AM5 motherboards; factor that in, and you’ll think why the electricity bill might not be such a bad hit in the meantime. DDR5 is also so expensive that DDR4 is still alive and worth it.
PCs require maintenance to last long; I repaste my CPU and graphics card about once a year. However, as these parts get closer to a decade old, I feel more and more anxious about their longevity. The silicon isn’t really the worry here; it’s what keeps the silicon running. Fans, solder, voltage regulators, and even VRAM have a limited lifespan from repeated heat cycles.
Some components on a GPU might be replaceable, but it would cost to do so. Would it be worth replacing the VRAM through a costly and technical process? Technicians aren’t cheap. The older the parts get, the more you have to financially prepare to replace them, depending on how important they are to your lifestyle.
The GTX 1080 Ti isn’t getting any more updates; it’s on legacy drivers. Each year I feel anxious that the software I use won’t support my GPU anymore. I also can’t upgrade to Windows 11 without updating my BIOS, which I find scary. While I can install Windows 11 without TPM or Secure Boot, I want to hold off upgrading to Windows 11 for as long as possible.
You shouldn’t shy away from old PC parts; they have great value, and I’d still buy them for future builds and upgrades. However, they’re not a perfect experience, and you may encounter things you don’t expect. Keep your eyes peeled for good deals, but also make sure you know what you’re getting yourself into.
